People have lots of strange beliefs, and lots of beliefs we presume to be normal could actually be seen as quite strange if they weren't so common.  The difference comes from the manner in which beliefs are created, moulded, promulgated and acted upon.  There's a lot of nuance here, so it's important not to judge somebody merely because of a strange belief.   If you have any more information that would help figure it out.
