The recent focus on hacker group LulzSec, as well as the amorphous Anonymous, has led to renewed scrutiny on the activities of hacktivists and calls for greater protection from them by the authorities; but it is important for future discussion to revolve around corporate and government accountability and transparency as well.

The UK has recently seen its first prison sentence handed out for cyber-bullying, as an 18 year old girl was sentenced to three months in a young offenders’ institution after pleading guilty to harassment.

So anybody who has much of an internet presence has heard by now that The Pirate Bay has been shut-down for good by their ISP following further legal action and judgments in Swedish court. This whole episode brings to the forefront the need for further discussion about the ethics of file-sharing and even creative intellectual rights as a whole.
