Digital Mandala: These Beautiful Lights

Digital Mandala: These Beautiful Lights

Today’s update brings something a bit different, returning to the music that I’ve created and uploaded in the past.

Previous tracks were created as a soundtrack for my novel When Winter Calls, with a side note tribute track to Philip K Dick, and it has been a while since I’ve uploaded anything along these lines.

The following track, entitled These Beautiful Lights, is intended to be two things. First, it has been created as a soundtrack for a short story of the same name that will be published here next week. Secondly, I wanted to explore the idea of creating digital mandalas out of audio (and potentially video) that bring this meditative practice into contact with some of our modern forms of media.

In this way, These Beautiful Lights has been recorded as a live performance without the use of a computer; but using modern musical synthesizer and eurorack modular technology. The process of creating and recording it was deeply meditative and I feel that it also lends itself well to such an experience when listening.

I recommend finding your favourite visualisation tool and downloading the track (I’ve allowed direct downloads on the Soundcloud page) to play through that, focusing on the movements and repetition that the melody provides as it takes you on a journey through and beyond the current chaos we are living in.

“The weary traveler by midnight who asks for bread is really seeking the dawn.
Our eternal message of hope is that dawn will come.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
